The Dark Side of SC Music

“Pretty music is ok, but I like mine real!”

Today I found the dark side of the music industry in South Carolina. I am not naming names though. I think we all know that these people exist because we have seen bands that have gotten big, used and dumped by the big blood-sucking record labels.

There are ways to make money playing music and you don’t have to “sell out” to do that. Be careful who your company is. Be careful who you surround yourself with. Likely enough if they are trying to make money off of you, you are potentially in a dangerous situation. Unless that is what you want. And that may well be what your band is trying to accomplish. Go for it. If you want to make a living letting someone else write your music. Go for it. I hope I never accidentally write about you or promote your band.

Let me tell you what Scene SC is about and it isn’t about using bands to make money. I’ll promote your band all day and that is because I probably love your music. I don’t ever want to see a dime of your hard earned money. I spend hours upon hours going to shows and video taping because it is what I love to do. I would love to find a way to make money doing this, but that way isn’t to somehow take money from bands or sell advertising to someone that I don’t even like so they can use my readers to promote their product. I was a Public Relations/Advertising major and I swear that it makes me sick almost all of the time. So we don’t sell advertising. If you see advertising on the website, I either like the business or I like the artist.

If you have read any of my past posts, pretty much all of the artist that I promote have something in common besides writing good music or being a good business. The words you will see a lot are truth, genuine and honest.

Bentz Kirby’s myspace says it best.

“Pretty music is ok, but I like mine real!”

So here it is. There are two sides to the music industry and hopefully from this post you can tell which crowd we at Scene SC run with. I feel like most of the bands that I am friends with and promote agree with my mindset. If you don’t we can just agree to disagree.

Always remember this too.

Bands with managers are going places.
Bands with messy hair and smooth white faces.

But you don’t believe when I say that it won’t be alright.

Do you want to be Best Buy or do you want to be Horizon Records?

The decision is yours, but atleast you know where I stand.

TRADE PANDEMIC Art & Mic Show

ART BAR

SATURDAY JULY 5th

$4

Gas prices are ridiculous so I know you’re not going out of town for the weekend of the 4th. If you’re smart you’ll come to the river and celebrate the nation’s birthday the same way our founding fathers would. Picture this, Ben Franklin laying out on a rock in the middle of the river, trousers rolled up above his knee, sipping on an ice cold PBR, flying a kite…

Now that you have that picture in your head picture this. It is Saturday July 5th and Ben Franklin and T Jeff are hungover trying to find something to do. I would bet my last dollar that they would go do something extremely American… like drink Bourbon.

And where better to do that than with the most exciting Southern Rock band I know The Bourbon Brothers. If you didn’t get the chance to see these guys when they won Battle of the Bands at New Brookland Tavern a month ago, then this is your chance to come out and see one of Columbia’s most exciting Rock Shows.

And talk about bang for the buck. For only $4 to get to see

Shallow Palace with CD Release, Something About Vampires and Sluts, Bourbon Brothers, and leavelifealone
Featuring an art work exhibition by photographers, painters, screenprinters, glassblowers, tattoo artists, and more.
DJ Straighten Up and DJ Variant

I mean this is hard times in America. It cost $4 bucks for a gallon of gas, a gallon of milk, a gallon of Orange Juice. Get my point. Personally I’ll take an Art Exhibition and 4 bands any day.

That’s not all though. It is also Shallow Palace’s CD release show and from what I have heard from the upcoming CD you really don’t want to miss them. I’m ready to have my face rocked off by the songs off their upcoming album Six Gun Hotel.

Come celebrate your freedom with me Saturday night. You know where I’ll be.

Get Evolved

Evolved Athletic put Bigfoot on a shirt. Anything that involves Bigfoot is awesome.

I know some of you are saying “Bigfoot isn’t cool, he isn’t even real.” Well think again my friend! The first Wiki website I came to about Sasquatch told me this.

The liberal propaganda has determined this “big foot” a hoax, but the shocking truth is that they lurk in the wilderness, informing bears when and where to attack civilization. Al Gore had a close encounter with one, mistaking it for a “ManBearPig”, and taught Big Foot in the ways of the liberal Dark Arts.

They are believed to be over 8 feet tall and covered in hair, and possess supernatural abilities. Because of their improved climbing, they can easily obtain honey, for which they reward bear underlings for committing treasonous deeds.

Big Foot is known to be the Abominable Snowman‘s black-haired friend.

Just to clear any confusion you might have, Bigfoot does go by many names including, but not limited to

Believe the truth.

Back to the point though. Evolved Athletic is a group of incredibly talented artists from the Southeast and Brooklyn who love what they do. This is obvious looking through their clothing.

They have great prices in their online store, so there is nothing holding you back from buying a shirt or two.

Mel Washington, Hello Tomorrow, The Devil and The Lion

The Watershed 6/28/2008

The first time I saw Hello Tomorrow was at New Brookland Tavern a couple of years ago on new music night and they played “You Gave Your Love to Me Sotfly” by Weezer. I was instantly a fan.

They didn’t play it Saturday night at Watershed Books in Lexington, but they still had the same infectious melodies that made me a fan a couple of years ago.

I was internally skeptical while they were setting up because I usually think a 3 guitar arsenal is unnecessary (especially with all Humbuckers). I wouldn’t say they pulled it off better than Lynyrd Skynyrd, but it definitely made the show more dynamic. Well done fellas.

Overall I really enjoyed their performance. They aren’t the most polished band yet and that isn’t always a bad thing. This band is full of potential. They know what they are doing with their melodies, melodic guitar solos, interesting breakdowns and they have got the soft to loud dynamic down.

I’m looking forward to seeing these guys in a place where people have to stand up to watch them and everyone can get into the show a little bit more.

MEL WASHINGTON

I’ve never seen Mel by himself only with All Get Out and he is a great solo artist. He played about a 30 minute acoustic set sometimes accompanied by a backing drum and keyboard tracks. I know I’m not the only one, but whenever I hear this I automatically think Postal Service.

I’ve seen two people pull this off really well recently and that was Mel Washington Saturday night and Mike Mewborne about a month ago at New Brookland. With technology the way it is now it is a lot easier for people to record backing tracks than it was even just a two or three years ago. With that being said that means more and more people are doing it. So if you are going to do it, do it well.

I feel the need to Flashback to a Pedro the Lion show at New Brookland in 03 (not positive on the year, but you get the point). Two important things happened that night.

A) It was the night that I found out my friends in Emery got signed to Tooth and Nail. I believe they were just in negotiations then.

B) It was the first time I had ever seen a Mac on stage.

David Bazan played in all three bands that played that night. He moved from lead guitar, to drums and then to Pedro.

One of the opening bands used the Mac during the show and I remember having no idea how he was using it. By the way this was a mac you saw in elementary school not that new wafer thin Macbook crap you see today. At that time I hated digital drums in any sort, but to see him using them I guess I started to stop being so uptight about it.

Connection – Seattle- David Bazan – Ben Gibbard – Postal Service – One of the Greatest Albums of my Generation.

Mel Washington- Great job, looking forward to All Get Out July 16th at New Brookland. Love the Sufjan cover.

THE DEVIL AND THE LION

I was first introduced to them at Headliners at the Manchester Orchestra show. Ya’ll got the 3 guitars down too.

There are a lot of reasons why I love Brand New and TDATL has a lot of that in their music. It is in the lyrics, the way lyrics are strung together and in the way the vocals are pushed to the limit, but don’t break.

The Devil and The Lion seems to draw from a pool of good music, pull out the best parts and deliver it with an emotional live performance.

The singer might have cut his hair since I last saw them, but from what I could tell they didn’t lose any strength in their live performance.
